Listen to the correction

‘We are not actually expensive.’ ‘We do work with smaller companies.’ ‘That service is not our main thing anymore.’ These repeated clarifications are not conversational clutter. They are diagnostic evidence.

Somewhere between the name, identity, headline, offer and customer experience, the business is creating the wrong expectation.

Fix the first impression first

Write down the three corrections you make most often. Then find the earliest place the wrong idea appears. Do not add a paragraph explaining the confusion. Change the signal causing it.

The prescription

Do this next.

  1. Record the questions and misconceptions from your next five enquiries.
  2. Trace each one back to the first misleading signal.
  3. Change that signal and see whether the correction disappears.
